HAPPY NEW YEAR!! Our New Year got started off with our wonderful guest couple Fred and Betty (not their real names to preserve their anonymity and protect the innocent). These two lovely people decided to celebrate Betty’s birthday (how many years? We’ll never tell!!) by joining Admiral Bobbie Rae and I (Captain Dave) aboard Bel Ami for a week’s worth of rest and relaxation. Being novice sailors, we originally figured they would not want to venture too far, mostly take in the secluded beaches in and around St. Thomas. Were we so wrong about that!! But so right in what we ended up doing! After their New Years Eve pick up at the airport, we went to some high spots overlooking Charlotte Amalie (the main St. Thomas harbor) then ended up having a fabulous New Years Eve dinner at the Mafoli Hotel, where one of the chefs waltzed in with a freshly caught wahoo. New Years Day had us visiting the Annenberg sugar mill ruins, and the next day we took a favorable North Wind to make our easting up the Sir Francis Drake channel, anchoring in the lee of Marina Cay, where Fred and Betty enjoyed happy arrrrgh and dinner ashore. Next morning the local vendor from Aragon’s studio came by with some luscious local treats. Then on to Anegada, where lobster was to be had on the beach at the Anegada Reef Hotel and dancing at Potter’s. Dueling rainbows greeted us the next morning as we shoved off back down the channel to Gorda Sound, and we visited the incredible Oil Nut Bay development. Betty was particularly at home in the “Nut House.” The evening was capped off by Happy Arrrr with Micheal Beans at Leverick Bay, where I got to play a little pirate accordion. Next day we sailed down the channel to Salt Island and hiked the hills, then on to Norman Island for more hiking and snorkeling. The voyage continued to Jost Van Dyke, where we visited White Bay and Ivan’s Stress Free Bar where Betty did some of her aerial/pole work to much adulation on the tire swing, and ended up at Foxy’s for the beach BBQ and dancing. Next day these two very in shape people hike with me to the top of the island for some incredible views. Then back to St. Thomas and the airport just in the nick of time. All and all, it was one of our most memorable trips, and we really enjoyed being our most natural selves with Fred and Betty. We hope to see them again soon!
